Words

Unkind expressions crash into our brains Where those spoken before are pooled. They sink self-esteem with anchor chains And consign us to being emotionally ruled. The assaults lap at our sense of self-worth Washing it away with as little as a word— One that wounds us untold moments on earth, One that makes civility blatantly blurred. We aren’t privy to the burdens others bear They aren’t for us to know at any expense. Might we use words with uncommon care Lest we naively perpetuate an allied offense.

Paul, I enjoyed your poem here on "Words" very much!! Words are indeed quite emotive. Words, in a word: "Count." Those of us who are poets and live in the world of allegory, metaphors, emotions and varied diction learn to appreciate the power of words and the passions they can stir when used properly or improperly. Most people in the world do not sense, appreciate or even care about these nuances. Words can bring great joy in this life, if we mean well by them. Well Done Work!! Cheers, Gary
