Winning Tears Mudlark

Walking along the pebbled beaches of Devon, Little Bertha and me were on a mission, To find some fossil of unknown dinosaur, Washed to these shores by waves from afar! Husband and son jack were searching as well, From their laughter doing great we could tell, This was a little wager between hubby and me, One who fetches best keeps the new car key! The shores are different from ones in San Diego, Here for the sea mud you have farther to go, I found a few that were not the very best, would probably be nothing if put to test! Bertha was happy to play in muddy sand, She picked some shells with her little hand, We ran around on sand or waded into sea, Deep inside I knew I was not getting the key! late evening when it was time to get back, Bertha and I rejoined husband and Jack, My heart missed a beat! The wedding ring! I knew all along something was missing! My smile had gone, face was ashen grey, I was quiet at dinner not sure how to say, that priceless ring, symbol of our love days, Was foolishly lost in the sea without a trace! Hubby and jack were both full of mischief joy, My husband was acting like a school boy! Unable to hold my sorrow I held out my hand, And shook my ring finger so he would understand. He saw my tears and came up close to me, He reached into pocket, perched on a knee, “Jack found your ring when we were at sea,” Here is your ring my Love, and the car key!” Mud lark Poetry contest 02/April/2020 Sponsor Kai Micheal Neumann
