When You Followed the Tumbleweed
You needed a spare horse
When you followed the tumbleweed—
So you’d not stray off course
By takin’ more than you would need.
You had long miles to go
And new trails that loomed dark and rough—
In sun and rain and snow
Over hill and canyon and bluff.
And when the first was tired,
You switched and rode then on your spare—
The best horse ever sired:
A gust of wind without a care.
And when you rode your last
And brought those horses in to feed—
You knew the time was past,
When you followed the tumbleweed.
