When You Are Young

...dedicated to W.B. Yeats, in response to his poem 'When You Are Old' When you are young sweet innocence abounds, your step is gentle, all your dreams are free of grim disquietude, such joy you see as gaily you discharge your daily rounds. Your heart is light, bereft of grave concern that troubles him whose purity is lost, who argues and contends at any cost, who complicates and twists at every turn. Simplicity must be your cornerstone, strengthen your heart against all sorts of strife that undermine a childlike view of life, strive and prevail, lest innocence be gone!

We hope childhood is wrapped in innocense; I've read of those who live with the devastating resuts of what was lost. This has so much meaning Keith, well done!

The innocence is short lived as reality takes over. I'd love to look at life like I did when I was 18.

Oh my, the last line reminds me of a poem by Robert Herrick..."Gather Ye Rosebuds while ye may....". However, in your write, you don't "undermine a childlike view of life". :) Would no be fun to bounce around angrily like foul-mouthed harpies, or screeching banshees.:( You are so a gifted poet, Keith! Best to you..God bless you and yours! Love, Mikki

I like the form you used. Have you read Omar Khayam's Rubiyat? The Quatrain is a powerful form and you have handled it well. Yours Matthew Anish

Some say ignorance is bliss, Keith. But as you stated so well here, youth are blessed with hope. Sometimes we regret losing that "childlike view of life." A wonderful dedication to William Butler Yeats! I'll bet you share my love for the Romantic Period writers, as you emulate them so well.
