Women and children muddle through debris Scouring the rubble for possessions lost War-torn Middle Easterners might agree That there is nothing worth this cost So many children will not have beds tonight Because nations believe might makes right Written September 28, 2019 For Joseph May’s “Make It Six” poetry contest Chose image number four

The main sufferers of war are the innocent souls. Those who wage the war often are less affected by it is what I feel. My heart wails when I think about children.

If our leaders who declare war had to fight themselves, I think there would be fewer wars. Thanks for reading

War, and people (especially children) suffering and living in poor conditions, are things which many of us are against. Your six striking lines confirm how futile such situations are, Carolyn. ~ Hugs // paul

War is never worth it. Looking for possessions but not finding anything that looks remotely like global sanity. A hard hitting, truthful write, Carolyn. Good luck in the contest and all else. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

I agree Carolyn. Most wars are fought I believe because of a disagreement between two powerful people. Wouldn't it be nice if people could just be satisfied with what they have and leave others alone. Great job here. God Bless, JB

Splendid verse, Carolyn, depicting so well the plight of so many kids around the earth. A contest winner for sure! I'm honored you consider Abandoned School house a fav - thank you. I'm revealing my age, but I attended 1st thru 3d grade in a school that had one teacher for those grades in one room and another teach for 4-6 in another room. Great to hear from you - Bob

Seeking to enforce one’s will on others, whatever the supposed justification, is merely evidence of one’s service to insanity...and hubris in all its hideous guises. What noble thing can be spoken of our species when only poets thus opine, as indeed you so aptly did.

Hello Carolyn … it must be such a terrifying life many in endless war theatres have to survive in. It breaks hearts to see the kids suffer - thanks Carolyn - Lindsay

My heart goes out to these poor families whose protection of their children is paramount. No child should have to live in fear. Your poem is gut wrenching Carolyn, and written so well! xxoo

When we see images of people sorting through the rubble on TV, I always wonder what becomes of the children when their parents die. Thanks for reading, Connie

wow, you really came up with a GREAT poem for that picture. You have a much better imagination than I do and geared toward humanity. Bless you, Carolyn. Soupmail.

You struck a chord with the 'war-torn' Middle Easterners line. I myself left the Middle East 41 years ago to escape what I perceived as never-ending terrorism and war. Didn't see much point to it, even though one has not choice but to defend oneself... Great write and good luck in the contest, Carolyn! Blessings, Gershon

Congrats to you, Carolyn, for your trophy with this touching, heartfelt write! (btw, I'm originally from Chicago, but I had moved to Israel in 1977. 140 bomb threats a week defused near where I worked in Jerusalem in late 1978 certainly got me thinking twice about my 'permanent' move. Actually almost got blown up myself on a bus. I was back by 1979). Blessings, gershon

I didn't know that, Gershon. I'm glad you made it to the United States. It seems like war never ends in the Mideast. Thanks for reading.

Two "world" wars resulted in millions of children growing up sans fathers but people have accepted that rather than corrected it. Let us be grateful there are people like Judge Dolly Gee willing to stand up and tell people like Trump that child abuse won't receive government approval on her watch! Aloha! Rico

The rich and mighty won't find their way , but the faithful and conscious should find the right way forward - but no one seems to take that leap! A poem that reaches our souls and enters our hearts Carolyn. A tragic reality of life so poetically expressed! Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

A tragic verse Carolyn, and a scene we see so often on TV, wars are not fought army against army anymore, they're fought in civilian areas with the innocent getting caught up in it. I too went for that pic no 4. Good luck. Tom
