the whip-poor-will calls only briefly I know that he is back and alive he sounds so weak and sickly I wonder if he will survive I long to hear his melody maybe his mate in answer is the weather too cold? or he's too old. What will be the outcome? he doesn't seem to have established his territory or his regular nest was this winter too cold or was it way too wet I hope the weather gets just right I hope he can sing most of the night his energy is so alive in this area he seemed to have thrived

Yes, that is a picture of a whip-poor-will. One of the species of nightjars. I have never ever actually seen one. There is one that sounds as if it is right in my backyard. There is a believe that when a whip-poor-will comes in your yard that someone will die. He has been coming here all of our married life so I guess someday we will die. Thanks for the visit. Sara K

You seem to be very observant and fond of birds. Let us hope that with slight change in the weather, the bird will be back to normal health and will delight your attentive ears with its overflowing melody. Enjoyed your poem, dear Sara.

Valsa, The whip-poor-will is back in full voice in the morning now. I guess maybe I can't hear him/her at night for some reason. When they get here and claim their territory once again, I know summer is on its way. Thanks for dropping by . Sara K

IE, I expect that part of the day today was scary for all the animals of nature because of the partial eclipse we had here, but tomorrow they will only have to deal with rain. Thanks for the visit. Sara K

I've seen owls in south London. Such elegant birds. Pity we don't have them in Malta. Great poem and so well argued.

Victor, I have read that some owls in the UK do make quite an interesting sound at night. Over here we have one that makes quite a nice sound, but another one that is terrifying. Each location seems to have its own kind of birds that the people who live there can see if day birds and also hear, but most places have some that are mostly night birds. Thanks for the visit and the nice review. Sara k

oh, poor whip-poor-will. I do hope he warms up and is singing well again. I hate to hear a creature struggle. Love this poem, Sara K. Wishing you and yours well, Sara B

Sara B, I have not heard him again. Maybe it is a little too early to hear them sing most of the night. Your visit is encouraging. Sara K

Lasaad, We have been here 59 years and the whip-poor-will(I know not the same one/s) have sung to us at twilight until we go to sleep and then again in the wee hours of the morning. I don't hear them as much because of double-paned windows with that insulation that helps the house stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. So, when I hear them sing it is delightful. Sara K

Tom, I know that you probably have a nocturnal bird/s that visit your area which you love to hear. The weekend has been good and so far I am able to get up and go a little which is good. We never know when it won't be that way anymore. Sara K
