We No Longer Teach People To Fish

We no longer teach others to fish, And wonder why they expect someone else to fill their dish, Each day anew with fish. We no longer teach others to fish, Instead we keep them on a leash, Always afraid of what they will unleash, On those who refuse to fill their dish. We no longer teach others to fish, Instead we choose to bring them a dish, That should be for those too young to fish. We no longer teach others to fish, And wonder why they return an empty dish, When their one wish, Is for someone to teach them to fish, So, they can relish, Not having an empty dish, To be filled with someone else's fish, And each day to feel hopelessness afresh.

Teach the young as they grow to think critically and empathetically. Teach them how to balance a checkboook, change a tire, iron a shirt, use a credit card responsibly, cover their mouth as they sneeze and say "Excuse me" when they yawn. So many have that "empty dish" you speak of when they are grown. no one taught them "how to fish" Great metaphor, just great.

Kind of you to say so Marikate. My daughter and her partner took me to a rotary book fair this month which is a family tradition They buy a box for me to fill for $30.00 and afterward we go to a nearby café. Hope you are as chirpy as I am today. Regards David in NZ

Sadly, many have come to believe that frozen fish sticks, delivered to your door, are the only fish there is. They seem unable to even dream about hiking up a stream to catch a trout, or fishing off a bank with worms dug from the ground. Metaphorically, of course

Yes very sad. I was an early childhood teacher for 30 years and worked off and on with problem teenagers teaching cooking and gardening. I remember a teenager asking how long you cook a jelly in the oven for. Our three year old grandson will be taught to fish physically and metaphorically. Thanks for taking time to read. Best regards David in NZ
