Ways of Living Xii
having spoken before
having taken a moment to
think, having said something
so harsh & then in retrospect,
so quickly wanting to take it
back---
paddling backwards with one’s
significant other, paddling
backwards & hoping that this
time they will not be so hurt
by what you have said that
they leave you high & dry,
wanting to make everything
ok again, wanting to make it
all hunky-dory, as if nothing
had ever happened---one
might go to great lengths to
pull a blanket over this
lashing out, but the fact
remains, each stab draws
blood & each drawing of
blood takes time to heal &
life is only so long,
we all may not stick around
for one who is constantly
out to drive a knife into us.
