Waltzing Bear

Written: November 03, 2023, For Brian Strand Contest ________________________________________ I was just a child, enraged by my inaptitude to act I dashed home, surprised, my eyes wide open trying to retain the tears at bay, fists clenched palms are pierced by nails, lungs contract, begging for breath... I couldn't keep an eye on him. He was a dark furred man-bear with forlorn, teary eyes, waltzing to the beat of a drum. In his irises, I saw the lushness of wetlands, cherries and wild fruits the vastness of the mountains as well as the nectar of icy streams, and honey-laden trees. With a chain around his neck, standing tall on his back legs all he was pleading for was freedom.

Whoa this is a bit different from your usual poems but i must say i am loving how descriptive your lines are, you’ve paid attention to tiny details when describing the reaction, emotions as well as scenery in such profound flow! I especially love the ending, how a bear was waltzing to the beat, and looking for freedom with a chain around his neck! Thats haunting and very sad for a child to witness! I hope this is fiction as i cant even imagine this happening to u, and what u must have gone throu

what a terrifying sight for a child to witness. My heart goes out to him and the bear. I felt this poem pull on my heart strings in such a deep, evocative way. Any creature, man or 'beast,' whose lost his freedom for whatever reason speaks to my soul. The imagery here was powerful. I love how you put 'freedom' in a line all by itself. Impactful! I was most taken by your creativity and your spirit. Well done, dearest Sotto!
