Wake Up Mommy

This morning I woke to the sound of a gentle rain.
There were no squeals of laughter, it was so quiet.
I remembered a morning and a child's joyful refrain.
"Wake up, Mommy, said my precious little one.
"Let's go see if Santa came down our chimney."
Christmas Day of madness had officially begun.
Years gone by, my little girl has a child of her own.
I wonder if he's waking her with peals of laughter.
So many years gone by...where have they flown?
Today she'll call and tell me about my grandson.
Respectfully she won't wish me a Merry Christmas
because she knows why I choose to honor The One.
She won't expect gifts wrapped in ribbons of gold.
Presents I lovingly send to them for no reason at all.
When snow drifts are deep and north winds too cold,
I'll warm myself with memories of years gone by.
This morning I woke to the sound of a gentle rain.
When the phone rang I heard my grandson's cry.
I remembered a morning and a child's joyful refrain.
