Author's Note: This particular poem is a quite sad one. I decided with this work to explore a relationship between a man and a woman that has gone terribly awry. In this instance, the man in this poem is the one who has borne the sadness and rejection he's experienced in a tragic love relationship with a woman who he thought was very special to him. The essence of the metaphor here is that this man really had, in the end, a very much one-sided love relationship where he was doing "all the giving" and his girlfriend (or even possibly wife) was doing "all the taking." The roles, of course, can easily be reversed such that a women is deeply in love and is doing all the giving, while the man she loves is doing all the taking. My attempt with this poem was to capture for a moment a picture of what some people go through and what they may think about when they are enmeshed in a relationship predicated upon "Unrequited Love." It is indeed sad, but these particular negative relationship experiences do happen sometimes to men and women as an unfortunate dynamic of our greater human existence in society. Sad this poem is, but I hope you find it of interest. (Gary Bateman - November 1, 2014) (Rhymed Lyric)
