Two Lovers and a Tree

I walked in the woods today Wandered through the land of the dryads, Till I stopped by an elderly tree- With two names in a heart on her cheek. Two names carved side by side, One boy and one girl A simple Adam loves Ella Encompassed by a hand-carved heart. And I wondered as I stared And traced the heart’s curving slopes- Who were these two? And when did they carve their love into the tree of time. Who was Adam and what did Ella think? Did Adam wander through these woods alone? Did he show Ella-or was this love Just a hidden pleading from his heart. And what of Ella? Was she worthy-or was she perhaps loftier then he? Did she love him back-was he ever told, There was no answer in the tree. So I kept on walking Till I met the nymphs of a river And let her lap my feet as a sat And sitting there I wondered, Of the two lovers and the tree But for every question- I had no answer So I wrote this just to say- That if you name’s Adam And you still love your Ella Please carve just beside your names That you two live on now As a couple and are in ever after most happily
