Today Is a Special Anniversary
The call came at my sister’s apartment
The woman said, “We have a kidney for you”
Waiting so long, I knew what it meant,
Years of dialysis, finally through.
I hung up the phone, tears began to fall
Both tears of joy, and sad tears for her death.
Now my premature end, she would forestall,
Giving the gift of life with her last breath.
Today’s a special anniversary!
A date of the miracle of rebirth.
To be worthy of the gift given me,
And grateful for the days as they unearth.
‘Twas on the thirteenth day of December
Twenty-three years, faithfully remembered!
