Through the Dark Night

Times may come when words will utterly fail Emotions run high, bitter tears prevail, After struggling with a profound heartache Sometimes our reliable bonds will break For people we trusted may turn their back A friend we loved may suddenly attack. Then, we may flounder while seeking a grasp Oh, to find one welcoming hand to clasp When words of consolation seem too few, And we can’t discern what else we can do. In times like these, we must not weakly fall But from inner reserves of courage draw, And, step by step, continue to press on Through the dark night to a promising dawn.

In the face of betrayal only the strong can employ their survival tactics. Well put, Milton, as usual. SuZ

"A friend we loved may suddenly attack." This does happen, and it is always a shock; the trick is to not overreact to it. Great poem - solid advice.

Caren, I sure appreciate your responses to my poems. You make such wonderful comments, and you are so complimentary. The latter I'm not sure I deserve.

Well said, Milton! What others mistake as courage may simply be marching on because it is the only acceptable alternative.

I have read such sonnets and often used them I think Robert Frost used this form. We are all concerned with other people. My we live in friendship.

Milton, you've written a well-built poem, and the reality contained inside is blatantly honest; people are concerned about other people's sentiments. Even though they are rotten to the core, they attempt to seem paranoid. Great form too.
