My heart lay barely beating, drowning in a marinade of salted tears that fell from my reddened eyes. Blood dripped down my chin from biting my swollen lips as if they were wounded like a heart pierced by words that were hurled as if they were whetted daggers. Whose fingertips drew the target upon my lashed back? The attack ripped my flesh, inflicting pain without pause. My cries were echoing in refrain, pleading for the cause. No response was given as I cringed and groaned in this shadowed place, this empty void. In fetal position on the floor, I flinched each time I heard knuckles wrapping upon my weathered door. Sluggish was my mind, as if waking from a nap, wishing I could snap out of Alice's realm where I can't tell if I'm under a spell or walking in a hellish nightmare of reality where I wax and wane like sunlight and moonbeams. Many things that surround me are not always as they seem.

Another dark one, Lin. Sounds a lot like depression. Brilliant as always. Great read!

Lol Danny. It’s not my depression. It’s based on a theme for an all poetry contest. Thanks for the visit.

Dearest Lin, Wow, the depths of emotional turmoil with raw intensity and dark imagery are perfect for your poem. I felt the depiction of heartache and despair is palpable, as tears mingle with salt, and wounds bleed physically and emotionally. I loved how the piercing poetic words hurled like daggers leave scars that echo in the silence as you grapple with the pain inflicted upon you. What a haunting experience of the complexities of human emotion and the struggle to navigate through the darkness toward the light of understanding and healing. - Blessings, Daniel

Good morning and thank you, Daniel. Old struggles and painful memories can be both haunting and daunting, even after years of hoping they fade. All is well in my world these days, but when emotions dictate poetry to me, I'd better have a pen ready at hand.

your poem left me breathless...truly magnificent creation. As you told the story, I felt pain, anguish, and despair through words like 'drowning in a marinade of salty tears,' 'hearts pierced by words'. When in pain and anguish I often think I'm living in the world of Alice in Wonderland and can't find my way out of the rabbit hole. Outstanding poem with such heart felt emotion and creativity. Faving. Have a splendid evening, hugs, Sara
