They Slipped Away
They slipped away - “I love you’s” -
beneath the cleansing surf
erased by moon’s nocturnal draw
hushed by the breaking waves of pain
they slipped away as darkness fell
upon hearts of daybreak dread
blended tears with salty spray
of windblown crested roar
they slipped away as curling cave
quelled the shriek of lover’s howl
rolled away – hard hearted stones
cold sands of never – now alone
they slipped away into the sea
“I love you’s” never - meant to be
