There Is An Image

There is an image in my mind An image by the gate The tall wide shouldered kind You trust with every fate And the white myrtle rose Is such a well groomed hedge And the orchid surely grows From that fertile cup of knowledge O there is an image in my mind An image in a rocking chair And children seated at his knees Web his stories in their fear Or sail with pirates on British seas And a child oft stood amazed At the great recitals of bards gone And eternal poets that blazed From the candle of his tongue till dawn The night long joy of memory. There is an image that is father The pain in the heart of history And the longing each day grows shorter.
