The Words 'I Love You'

The words, “I love you.” Should not be lark song loud Nor zephyr light sighing Nor dancing like a mountain stream. Neither should they be hammer anvil proud Nor furnace flame flying Nor rending the night like a lightning storm The words, “I love you” Should be boulder smooth and reassuring Baked by an Aegean sun Warm, solid, time-enduring Bearing all, excluding none, Gain and loss; pain and pleasure All bound therein in equal measure. © Barry Freeman – 11th March 1999
