The Wooden Swing Set

Quiet and still now. The swing occasionally catches the air. The tire never moves. There’s no one there to care. The jungle gym beside it is played with by squirrels. The sand box below holds creatures quiet and shy. Tiny plastic men are lost in the sand deep below. A metal car is with them, once favorite of them all. Leaves stir in the clubhouse, with spiders in its loft. My son hadn’t played with it for a long, long while. But I hadn’t noticed while he was here running in the house. And now when I see the Wooden Swing Set… It’s connects with my empty heart. A touch of Empty Nest Syndrome brought this poem to me.

A wonderful heartfelt poem Carol, I felt the loneliness throughout. The abandoned chair was a fine image for the brain.

Very beautiful poem about days gone by. Thank God for memories. Although they are sad they also bring back the joy of those times.... Very well crafted, Carol.... Robert.

Carol, Congratulations on a winning entry. I am saddened by your poem, but I suppose that was the purpose of all entries in this contest. I suffer your pain in remembering what used to be.... I pray comfort will find you.... Hugs..... Jake

This was so heartbreakingly sad Carol! It reminded me of how I feel while watching Toy Story 3 (especially the ending). When you're feeling sad and nostalgic just remember... that's why there's grandchildren! Definitely a worthy win!

Shame, Carol. I know exactly where you were when you wrote this. Both my children, a set of pigeon twins, have not only left home but they're living in two different countries and I'm on my ownsome back home. Awesome write and a well-deserved win in Andrea's "fave poem" contest. :)
