The Wisdom of the Seed

I find it quite strange how so many people desire drastic change: Change would be so simple! Change would be terrific! Yet when I ask them, what kind of change, they leave out specifics saying, "Change is what we need and change is for the better! Staleness has gotten old like an ugly Christmas sweater! At this point in time any change at all would most likely do; I care not what that entails just as long as it's something shiny and new!" But pray tell, I'd wish you stop and ponder what it is you're convinced is greener out there in yonder. Bigger house? Shinier car? More fashionable attire? Perhaps some allusive 'she' whose heart you could admire? Some people want to change until the day they die. While old-fashioned me, can't help but wonder why? Let us never exercise the thought of changing! Let us be as mountain rivers ceaselessly flowing! Do you recall what the seed said before it became a tree: some dream of changing, I dream of growing.

Good morning Timothy. In reality we are all in state of changing. For me it is not about seeking the new or temporary I choose to be in a state of being. Being present, being aware, being authentic, being thankful. I like your comment about growing, we indeed can grow and at some point we will decline until we are ushered to Glory where we will experience the true essence of being.

I wish I could be more like you with the "being" comment. My head is often high in the clouds, but I know deep down that the present moment is all we are given... it's just hard to embrace it sometimes.

Always with great insight, my friend. Changing is inevitable, but growing is optional. I don't think it's healthy to change for change's sake though... too grow means to become more of what you truly are, and that might entail changing here and there, but it doesn't have too. You should read C. S. Lewis's essay on Three Ways of Writing for Children, and you might find some of my inspiration :)

I'm impressed by your wise thoughts, Timothy. It is true, that we often hear people calling for change, but little do they realize that change can make things worse than they are....take politics....parties in opposition clamouring for change, and when it arrives what do we find? ...the same or worse! Your ending lines say it all ... with sense! // paul

Public campaign slogans like Hope & Change are all very nice, but have no substance without the context. Hope for what exactly? And what kind of Change is it that's going to take place? These words, by themselves, are only "nice sounding", but leaves everyone in hopeless ambiguity.

You connect the dots very well, for it was politics that inspired this piece! Originally, my intention was to make this solely political, but as I thought about it I realized that this poem concerning change applies to life in general, so I left it at that.
