The Unanswered Plea of Centuries

The Unanswered Plea of Centuries You know Just for once Give me a God Who understands A God that answers A God that heeds And acts on prayers A God that doesn’t pretend With mysterious hog wash And convenient coincidence A God profound In it’s helping hand Who doesn’t leave us Praying for centuries For some kind of explanation A God who’s goal Is happiness and love Who devises miracles to make it so Who comprehends the human misery And really, really Knows what it means to be Human Just for once Give me a God who doesn’t need praise And the endless devotion of sin and hymns Give me a God Who listens instead A benign benefactor A protector of innocence A smiling sympathy For life’s encumberments Who just wants us to be whole Just for one aching, burning, longing, everlasting time Give me a God who is sublime And doesn’t hide behind The pretence of some religion Of the desperate need to believe In some irrefutable truth Give me a God Who really cares Who has a grip And a compassion For the overwhelming possibilities Of the happy human Just for once Give me a God Who actually gives a damn Give me a God With a real helping hand And not some vague will to comprehend And this This has been the quiet plea The unanswered prayer of man For centuries

I too have been there ... muttered like a mad man to myself ... am I figment o fmyown dream ... why are my prayers not enough for him to speak ... and then I see my children looking to me with the same accusation in their eyes ... a great poem that brings it all back like a flood. Great write!

I ask you, in all honesty, as a questioning man... what does God owe us.. nothing ?.. ? As part of this great and grand creation.. do we not deserve at least the same rights as the sun... you yourself as a negro must understand the concepts of oppression ... we are merely slaves to a will that neither informs us, or directs us.. but pretends to care for us in our slavery...

Its the endless "some day" that worries me Chris.... I mean how long has this been going on ? History, centuries and all the lives there in, must equal in the billions. Its hard for me to discount all those lives in the apparent today-ism of modern life... as if all those prayers never meant a thing.... but just die in the next generation of supplicants...

aww what a great write, God does answer our prayers just his timing is very different from ours, it took me 29 years but my prayers were finaly answerd, and it is hard for those prayers that seem they don't get answered at all, somethings we never will understand some prayers we make might not be Gods' will for our life its a difficult one colin and I hope you find your answers, he will reveal all in his timming, it takes time but his timing just comes at the perfect time. God bless you.

Wow Colin. I have no religious comment as I have no answers. I respect your poems voice, as I respect all believers and non believers as each of us have our own reasons of faith, or lack there of. My own personal faith is just that, personal, so I will comment only on your poem. It is deeply emotional, well written and will strike a chord in many, so be prepared for comments here, as I'm sure you are. Powerful, as your gift is. Simply an outstanding write from an outstanding man. Love, Shar

Sometimes we feel like God isn't listening to our prayers, Colin. I understand why you believe this; you convey your message well in your poetic words. But I sometimes wonder if God gets tired of receiving so many "requests" and not enough prayers that say "thank you." Your excellent write gave me much to ponder on this Sunday morning. Good work! Love, Carolyn
