The Truth Set Me Free
I sat across from you
Wide-eyed and hopeful
Once again believing in myself
There was no way to foresee
You would carelessly utter words
That would alter our love forever
A casual conversation
Turned grievous without warning
With complete lack of forethought
You hurled your words at my heart
A moral obligation
Is what I've become to you
Floored
I stand and walk away
Your words bounced around my brain
And echoed in my ears
I tasted them on my tongue
Dry and stale
My mind reeled for some response
A defense
But I am too proud to accept your version of myself
And you are too arrogant to fathom you made a mistake
So I leave behind the only life I've ever known
Unwilling to be your ethical burden
Never humble enough to accept your altruistic pity
