The Things I Cherish

The things I value, The things I cherish, Are things no one else will When I perish Do I write a missive Explaining the why? Would this help save things After I die? This brown dead rose, A gift from your dad, Brings back the best night I ever had. This bead of pink Once on a baby’s wrist Only memory left Barely a wisp The things I value, The things I cherish, Are things no one else will When I perish Chosen Poem of the Day by PoetrySoup on 10-11-2018

I will try to write notes about certain things before I leave this plane.

Hi, Caren. This poem is like a song, and its regular rhythm reflects the rhythm of life as it passes, giving us things to cherish and remember. You cherish the right things. Nicely done :)

How nicely you touch the heart, Caren. Remembering my Mom... I took transfer to be with my Mom after dad expired. She was so happy for almost a year, when me and my wife were with her; gossiping with my wife during the day and waited for me when I would return from office; Welcome smile on her face as I enter can't forget. She won't take food till I finish my dinner in her presence. So much memory of her giggle, small talks .... Thanks for this poem. God bless you.

I am so glad that you and your wife had that time with your mother. That is sacred, and God-given. I am so glad for her and for you! You are special people. God bless you both!

Caren, this takes me to my mum. Got me thinking of what are the things she values and cherishes. It’s a wakeup call for me to ask her. Would love to know what they are, and hold onto them long after she is gone. Thank you for sharing.

Joshua do it as soon as possible. It will mean the world to her, and you may learn things about her that you never knew. It will be a great time for both of you!

This might very well be one of my all time favorites. Ty. My friend, you continue to make my heart cry for all the right reasons. Ann

You are welcome. I look around my house and laugh, thinking of all the bonfires the children will have at my expense when I am gone.

Hi Caren, You have already read many of my poems. I'll be a while catching up. But I do appreciate your comments... thanks so much! I enjoyed this poem, "The Things I Cherish". We are the same, but different. And when we're gone, we take it all with us. I was thinking about a few things that mean a lot to me, and only me... like a certain spot in the woods I found when I was hunting one day. Carved out by God himself, a special treasure just for me. Nobody else. Effective repetition!

Thank you. I was thinking one day I had better put notes on the things I really have a great memory about, so the ones who are sorting will think hard about whether to toss them.

Dear Caren. Great poem. It brings out good sentiments about our individuality, what you as a poet can cherish is indeed unique. Regards. Mpho Kgaswane.

I see why this was chosen POTD Caren. I can relate so well. The sentimental things we so cherish sometimes have little value only to us. Everything has a story and if you share that story with your kids they won't be so fast to discard the things you cherish. I am sharing my stories with my granddaughter as she is sentimental. This moving poem gets another Fave from me. I love it! : ) xxoo

Thank you Connie. I was shocked it was POTD. Not one of my favorite poems at all, but I guess a lot of people could relate to it which has pleased me greatly.

Caren: Shame on you for making an old man cry. I have a bit of that "junk" of my own that I cherish. I don't know if it's the writer in me or just my age? I fear it won't be around long after that "fateful day". :o) Thanks for drawing us aside for a few moment to "ponder". Keep them coming. oldbuck

HEY CAREN, I READ A FEW OF YOUR POEMS CAN'T COMMENT ON ALL YET BUT I AM CAPTURED BY WE ARE NOT MERELY POETS; I SEE ME A REFLECTION OF ME IN MY EARLY TIMES TRYING TO BE PROTECTIVE, AND I ALSO SEE AN IMAGE OF A SHY LITTLE GIRL WHO WAS DRIVEN BY A PASSION INSIDE THAT DRIVE HER

Right on Caren! To others things are just "stuff ". I get people saying..,well, why don't you throw that out". So dense people are.. Absorbed in organizational madness. I found a Christmas corsage..an articial one, that belonged to my Mother. When I touch it, she comes to life again. It's become a sin to cherish, Panagiota.

I have a flannel shirt of my dad's. He has been gone almost nine years. When I miss him, I wear his shirt. It still smells exactly like my Dad, and I feel him. I say "Hi Dad" every time.

You relate your life so candidly with language that makes your pieces easy to consume - this is true throughout every piece of yours I've had the pleasure to read so far. This was a delight to read!

I deal with everything in this way; I have a husband, a dog, three children, ten grandchildren, two sons-in-law, and a cat who is haughty.

I have just come across your beautiful poem Caren, it is so touching and sadly true, as our treasured belongings will probably mean nothing to our family. Congrats on POTD, which although I should receive daily, I do not remember getting this wonderful poem, which I love. So belated congrats from me Caren xx
