The Sun Rises
She could not have delivered
a clearer statement than the one
she just made and thinking of it now
brings a grin to her long-suffering face.
The stinging slap she landed
on that arrogant cheek sounded
so sweet to her ears, much sweeter
than anything she could ever imagine.
How could she have been such a fool
not to stop and put him in his place
after many years of endless abuse
with nary a question nor complaint.
Why she passively put up with him
to treat her like a piece of garbage
is beyond her now, best forgotten,
thinking ‘no master, no slave’.
Liberated, freed from bondage,
ah, so great is her satisfaction
that just a single act of courage
finally stopped a bully on his track.
Today is a bright and glorious day
when a brand-new woman is born,
proud, confident and nobody’s fool,
out of the shadow for sure.
The sun rises.
