I wrote this for a contest on another site. The object was to tell a story in rhyme. So I thought why not about rhyme.
The Story of Rhyme
By Franklin Price

It was so very long ago
Maybe once upon a time
That someone thought to write a poem
Using words that made some sense in rhyme
Since none had done this kind before
And words were short to sound the same
This person had a contest then
For everyone a rhyming game
Sent announcement out by horse
Which was the fastest at the time
And since it was not done before
The definition of a rhyme
Since only few could read and write
The few that came were not so good
Not overwhelmed by entries much
No paper then, were carved in wood
Since carving was a thing of skill
Not done by educated man
Just one entry was received
I'll quote it here the best I can
I carved this rhyme in wood for you
I read and write my name is Bob
This rhyming thing will never last
Don't give up your daytime job
