The Story of "i Love You"
When I was but a little girl
picking flowers and making believe,
I pictured my future with naive perfection,
and stories of the perfect husband I'd weave.
He would be smart, funny, and handsome,
A knight with a horse, for sure.
He'd read my mind and love my friends,
I would be lonely never more.
As the years passed I met some boys,
I thought they'd surely do.
With expectations high as the sky,
I welcomed the first few.
Soon enough I came to see
that those boys weren't what I dreamed.
I pictured a new jaded future,
The old one was hopeless, it seemed.
I spent some time alone like that
keeping boy after boy at a distance,
when I met a man with smiling eyes,
who tore down all my resistance.
He sounded like a memory
from a childhood left behind,
but he was smart, funny, and handsome,
loved my friends and read my mind.
Suddenly I remembered that knight,
the husband I'd make believe.
This man of mine was not that guy,
but hundred-fold what a knight should be.
