THE POETRY OF CANCER
(For Shelly)
My editor says
keep it simple,
so here it is:
you died on Saturday
and your viewing
was Monday.
You were a good poet
but cancer
ate through you
so fast you didn’t have
time
to write a good-bye
poem.
Now here it is Tuesday
and I am
waiting
for an email
that will never
come.
