The Peace of Wild Things

Alone and left to contemplate, had I a pair of wings, I’d fly away and search the world for the peace of wild things. To live among the animals and sense their lack of guile existing in the here and now, each moment spent worthwhile. And free of life’s addictions, material wealth and greed— possessing very little, according to the need. But should I ever so depart it’s uncertain I’d return, for then I'd have a lifetime’s worth of so much to unlearn.

I had never replied to your comment for which I'm sorry. You expressed such deep emotion and fondness for my poem that it left me feeling humbled, thinking that I hardly deserve such adulation. Nevertheless, don't take it away!

Fantastic! Searching for the peace of wild things. People are confused by me because I will camp way out in the woods alone, feeling perfectly safe, but will not go into a big city alone.

Your mention of camping alone prompted a memory of times I've camped in the wilderness (never alone, however) and felt like a big weight had been lifted from my shoulders. My senses seemed enhanced, and I've wondered if in civilization we aren't disconnected from earth's base frequency and by all the EMF floating around. Anyway, keep camping and thanks.

Thanks, Andrea. I wrote the first stanza sometime ago, but then the line went dead. I tried so many times to restore contact but finally I just sat down and decided it had to be finished. Glad you liked it.

Robert: So glad you liked this poem. I think the subject and treatment of this resonates well with many poets.

Hi Mark. I like this. I think the 3rd line could be shorter but the rest of the poem shines. I like your ideas but I wonder if animals aren't a lot like us. Nice to see an original poem written so well. Thanks Mark. Trevor

Trevor, I agree with you completely. I knew something was making me hiccup, but I was too close to figure out what it was. Thus, the Trevor McLeod modification has been implemented. Thanks for your kind remarks.

It would be fantastic to live amongst the wild with no cares, no greed, no drama .or hatred.

In many ways, theirs is a better world. For certain, I would rather have us become more like them than for them to become more like us. Thanks for your comment.

Dear Mark, We surely think alike. There is a song by Paul Simon in which he sings, "I'd rather be a forest than a street." He goes on to convey the message you have written so well of here. Frankly, I've seen enough of "material wealth and greed" and would like to soar above the animal kingdom with you. Great twist at the end when you say there would be "so much to unlearn." I wonder if it's even possible. This poem goes to my favorites. Bravo! Carolyn

Carolyn, and something else I read expresses the desire more hopefully: Any sufficiently advanced civilization is indistinguishable from nature. Your comments honor me. Thank you.
