The Night Before
Many a sad tragedy:
that many a reader, will adore
will often find, its Climax
in the phrase; "the night before".
The rich man, that washes up
on bankruptcy's vast shore;
has only to blame, the one bad decision,
made at the casino, the night before.
The junky who needed less;
but only wanted more,
lies dope-sick and depressed;
from the relapse, the night before.
The broken vows, of a cheating husband,
be broken still, despite the ring he bears no more:
for he forgot how to love his wife
in the brothel the night before.
If life be one of Shakespeare's tragedies,
this phrase is surely; motif galore:
we be fools; doomed by our dreams;
dreamt on the Midsummer's Night before.
