The maple leaf a symbol of Canada, red and white official colors, Thousand of designs, years of exhausting debate, finally unfurled in 1965; It adorns the tombstones of military graves, it flutters above my great county. ___________________________________ July 15, 2015 Verse Flag of Canada Written by Broken Wings For the contest, Represent your Country/State, sponsor, Skat Second Place

I recall as a boy in school, entering a national contest to design the Canadian flag and all the debate that preceded the final winning choice. Always a proud Canadian I do not miss the Union Jack. Emile.

The original Canadian flag was given to deputy speaker of the house Lucien Lamoureux. He passes away shortly afterwards and the flag was draped over his coffin. Somehow later it was misplaced and only recently has it been found. That first flag is referred to as the Lamoureux flag.

The National Flag Of Canada replaced the British Union Jack in 1965 after years and years of debate. The sugar maple leaf has been a symbol of Canada since the 1700's, the red and white always the official colors of Canada, it is against the law to write on the flag or use it as a table clothe, our maple leaf is found on coinage, medals, in poetry and song and flutters almost everywhere in Canada. It was unfurled of Feb 15, 1965, so it is not that old.
