The Lunatic Near the Station
The lunatic near the station
Stood calmly like a statue
Under the flash of the big street-light
While the dogs barked at him endlessly,
Possibly with an air of expressive envy
At the man who guarded the night
More faithfully than they did!
Some mocked him...some laughed
And the gentle ones passed without noticing
This absurd creation of Nature!
He never uttered a word,
Neither displayed a smile...nor a tear,
As if he had bargained his emotions
For a life of loneliness...
Years have passed since I have left that city.
There is no street-light nearby...
No barking of dogs.
Yet he stands in his peculiar posture
Portraying the indifference of his countenance
In the corridors of my memory...!
