The Lively Oak
Your long, flowing branches
harmoniously flow across the acres,
a visual landmark in your arena.
You have provided generations
a reprieve from the harsh climate,
a playground for babes,
a private picnic for new lovers.
You have graced the lanes of stately manors.
Human atrocities have been
comitted upon your boughs.
You have seen many summers pass
and seasons change,
and you have overcome them all.
You carry an ecology all your own.
You are a miracle of God
only to be brought down
by tempestuous children
named Katrina and Gustav.
