The Grizzly Bear

The leaves had fallen weeks ago, the trees were standing bare, As I would sit and watch the snow drift gently through the air. Just beyond the veil of white, so seemingly benign -- As I would gaze into the night, and sip my glass of wine -- A silhouette of death appeared, and I could only stare To see what I had always feared…so vague, but - clearly there. Peering through the dark and flake…at first a bit obscure… I saw the lumbering stance he’d take, and watched the quivering fur As…charging through the frigid night, the Grizzly made his way, With me -- the target in his sight…his evening meal…his prey! Crashing through the wall of glass - (the only thing between) - The roaring monster made his pass to kill the one he’d seen. Standing more than ten feet tall, I smelled his raunchy breath As -- framed within the shattered wall -- a thousand pounds of death Was poised to tear my limbs away, now slashing through the air! But…..I would live another day, and left him lying there! I only lived because the bear -- would have a heart attack! I skinned the varmint then and there! You’re standing on his back! I love this, Mark. Good story, well-written and a shade of humor! I didn't expect the last line, but it was soooo appropriate.
