The Game of Life

No one asked me if I’d like to play, they just dealt me a hand anyway. Said I could learn as I played along. So when I plopped down the ace of spades, they said a ten’s what I should’ve played. So I guess I’d learned the rules all wrong. I said, it’s the best card there can be. They said unless you’re born before three, on a Wednesday in the pouring rain. Seems every time I try hard to win, I will only lose my way again. This game of life’s driving me insane. Chorus: When it comes to living, looks like I lose again. In this life if you don’t cheat, then you’re never going to win. Hard work and honesty, ain’t gonna get you there. If you end the game face down, no one’s even going to care. They said boy, I guess it’s a real shame, that you don’t know the rules of the game. They slapped my back and said with a smile. Don’t make a tinker’s damn anyway, you’re wrong no matter which one you play. The rules keep on changing all the while. Repeat Chorus: When it comes to living, looks like I lose again. In this life if you don’t cheat, then you’re never going to win. Hard work and honesty, ain’t gonna get you there. If you end the game face down, no one’s even going to care. Yea, they slapped my back and said with a smile. Boy, don’t you know the rules keep on changing all the while.

Hey Jerry... Your poem offers a poignant reflection on the challenges and contradictions inherent in navigating life's complexities. Through its exploration of unfairness, disillusionment, and the arbitrary nature of societal norms, it invites readers to reflect on their own experiences and perceptions of success and failure in the game of life.

Thank you, Silent One for your generous comment. As they say, life isn't fair.

a brilliant and powerful lyrical poem, Jerry. There's a certain feeling of insanity and loss of personal empowerment as the rules change. I feel that way as an 'older' person. I keep reminding myself, "Okay, this is the new normal--for today." Nicely done. have a great day, Sara

Back in the day, all a person had to do was work hard and keep your nose to the grindstone. Now, it seems that everybody has their own set of rules. Thanks for stopping by and reading this, my friend. Have a blessed day, Sara.

Good lyric poetry, Jerry, I'm sure it would be a good country song if you put a dog in there somewhere. :-) Your message is true in this here world we live in, but it will change when this world ends. Have a nice Sunday, my friend. Bill

Need a pickup truck and a beer. And of course, it would be nice if I could play an instrument or sing.
