The Earth's Not Just For Christmas
The Himalaya’s melting.
What’s happening to the Earth?
Have we got time to celebrate
An ancient baby’s birth?
The sea-birds have stopped breeding.
The Gulf stream’s running cold.
The deserts are expanding,
While more SUVs are sold.
The 747s are pumping
Their greenhouse gassy fumes;
Will the passengers’ grandchildren
Go early to their tombs?
Did the shepherds run to worship
At the stable with the ass
Expecting that the earth would melt
Like Greenland’s icy mass?
It’s one thing to be sinners
And have one’s sins forgiven
By a crucified Israeli
Who then returned to heaven,
It’s another to destroy the gift
He did his best to save.
The Earth’s not just for Christmas:
Let’s keep it from a sweltering,
Parched, unnecessary grave.
