The

Devil's

Nightly

Quest

REVISED OCTOBER 16, 2019 New Jersey’s cloven-hoofed devil makes his way to the jetty beneath the blanket of twinkling stars, anguish unabated his appetency growing stronger each day her song rose like mist upon salty tide creating an irresistible allure perhaps a mermaid so fair can be the auspicious boon he badly needs he calls to her, certain she will listen again as she has done so many nights before his soul’s torment she has learned to alleviate patiently, she clings to one boulder, waiting for she alone can absolve him of past misdeeds she motions for him to draw near “Kiss me now,” she begs, “Before anything more can go awry.” he moves toward her, still in atrocious devil form holding fast to the rocks as a storm approaches perhaps this time their magical kiss will forever end his loneliness October 14, 2019 For John Hamilton’s “Crazy A’s” Poetry Contest The New Jersey Historical Society provided information about the New Jersey Devil and the mermaid he is said to connect with each night by the shore.

Truly unique and captivating Carolyn; perhaps the idea that repentance is entirely separate or impossible for devils isn't evident in this piece; the gentleness of women oft mellows men and causes devils to see glimpses of God. Your poem is s reflecting on Oedipus and motherly-love as well. This lovely write is worthy of great praise;-) Fave my Lady

I had never heard of New Jersey’s devil, Carolyn, so your beautiful poetic narrative grabbed my attention even more. Will that kiss ever become reality, thus freeing him from whatever imprisoned him in such a monstrous form!? ~ Hugs // paul

Tom, the "devil" made his first appearance in the 1700s, before the Revolutionary War. He is said to be the 13th son of a Mrs. Leeds, who lived in the pine barrens and rejected her child at birth. Very interesting story about the devil's love for the mermaid. A fisherman in Long Beach had seen the devil singing to the mermaid. Thanks for reading...

Wow Carolyn, that was so cool. Very well written and I love the theme, trying to save him from his loneliness. I am from South Jersey and very familiar with the Jersey devil. I have also been to the pine barrens but never viewed the creature like you have. Best wishes in the contest.
