The Day After Christmas
Brand
new day.
Credit cards
groan their despair,
weighted down with debt.
Crumpled wrapping paper
mingles with forlorn ribbons.
Children fight for a single toy,
all other gifts lie there forgotten.
The Christmas spirit has left the building,
its decaying carcass lingers behind.
The tree must be stripped of ornaments,
decorations are put away.
Life goes back to what it was
before the holiday.
Leftovers for lunch,
fruit cake with tea.
The cusp of
a new
year.
