The Cold Return
The Cold return
We were lured in great numbers,
by their promises of a glory.
Oh yes we were led enchanted,
like sheep to the house of slaughter
Told that glory came with riches; gold, ale and women.
So fought we for causes that were greater than ourselves,
Oh so they said, such great fools we were..
We bled and died for these ideas
Ideas that weren't even fully formed.
Ideas of a Justice, of life; a life of war?
and freedom they said
all our hopes were about attaining these,
So we fought and got blooded
We fought and got robbed of our innocence
Stripped of all meaning save that of war.
We fought for justice but were we just?
Life? Did we truly live?
Freedom is yet another idea we fought for
a grave thing indeed; Can one truly attain freedom?
Do we have it?
For we paid for it in full with the blood of our brethren
And in the end we returned and for our troubles we received only a cold emptiness.
We were bitter reminders of their loss,
Thrown and rejected as relics of an old forgotten struggle.
