The Cause

I saw that rage, I saw that impulse How that streak of insanity grew, I heard that groan, felt the rising pulse I felt the heat, I felt the blood brew. When I looked at him, I saw him right Despair encrypted on his withering face - How with his emotions he did fight! What had become now of once an ace! Alas! I kept looking at his fate, Not realizing time was sailing away, When I rushed to him it was too late His cold lips had nothing to say... I say he sinned, but silent I was, I failed to save him, that was the cause.
