That Hallowed Place

My first was beside the outside loo, 'cos my wife said not indoors thank you. I made her a table from an old headboard, She was pleased, I knew I had scored. My second was in a closet, 20 floors high, My wife said keep it tidy, I said, Oh my! I made the kids toys for Christmas those times, We had no money to spend, saved all the dimes. My third, was state of the art, even I must admit. From scrap timbers that were due to be burned On the top of my Reliant, it was conveyed, The roof bellied in and the little car swayed. Many trips it took, all the weekend I didn't shirk But I got all the timbers from my place of work. In case you are thinking ,not a stick did I nick, A simple note from the site agent did the trick. Now the garden is filled with all I need to build, sheets of marine ply, 1 inch thick and treated, Should be well weatherproofed when winter came, There were lengths of timber to make the frame. Never had a plan, it was all set in my mind, I knew it would work, my ideas were refined, I made frames for the sides, front and back, A high sloping roof for an inside timber rack. I laid a foundation of flagstones, level and true. A conduit pipe for the electrics to come through, I worked each night after work until dark, Almost felt I was building an Ark. As I made each frame and set it in place, Fran said she could see the smile on my face. Each one fitted to it's mate with no faults, Perfectly joined with 1/2 inch coach bolts. The 6ft window was set facing the house, So I was warned of an incoming spouse. Roof felted, and the door fitted just right, Then the lighting so I could work at night. Workbench and shelves, places to store, Along the back and end for me to store more. When all was finished I was pleased to see, This Man Cave was ready. Just for me. It stood for over 25 years. © Dave Timperley. 20/07/2018
