Samuel Taylor Coleridge is the premier poet-critic of modern English tradition, distinguished for the scope and influence of his thinking about literature as much as for his innovative verse. Active in the wake of the French Revolution as a dissenting pamphleteer and lay preacher, he inspired a brilliant generation of writers and attracted the patronage of progressive men of the rising middle class. As William Wordsworth’s collaborator and constant companion in the formative period of their careers as poets, Coleridge participated in the sea change in English verse associated with Lyrical Ballads (1798). His poems of this period, speculative, meditative, and strangely oracular, put off early readers but survived the doubts of Wordsworth and Robert Southey to become recognized classics of the romantic idiom.  much more at link given...

Ten Years Had Raced Into Oblivion's Cup Second Poets Tribute Series, Samuel Taylor Coleridge Chained am I, to desolation's huge anchor on its long black ship, cargo of hate and rancor yet in spirit oft I roamed blue skies above and in my fantastic dreams, found I my true love! Such was a balm that fled when heartache renewed Could return only when young life was reviewed! Alas! At night stars dimmed and evil winds blew midnight hour, I was served bones I could not chew and a foul drink of bitter regrets and lying as Fate had set me here, this ship of slow dying! Such was a dark curse, uttered by her deep hate For she turned to darkness to then alter my Fate! Ten years had raced into oblivion's cup into darkest seas we went, I never gave up tho' soul had been impaled by poisonous blades I clung to that romantic love that never fades! Such as the poets of old sang and wrote about Crying to the heavens, chorus of mighty shouts! Chained was I, to desolation's huge anchor on its long black ship, cargo of hate and rancor yet in spirit oft I roamed blue skies above and in my fantastic dreams, found I my true love! Such was a balm that fled when heartache renewed Could return only when young life was reviewed! Robert J. Robert, you have done a great service by highlighting the brilliance of those that came before us. This is an exceptional tribute for which he(Coleridge) I'm sure would be pleased. Thanks for your poetic insight and contribution to the edification of this site. Quality should never take a back seat to popularity, but alas, as you correctly state that is the case here on this site.

Thank you my friend. Was an honor for me to honor and give information and compose poems dedicated to and on these brilliant, golden poets of old! Sad that with the ease one can read these poets, modern poetry seems to try to limit such. Instead focuses on modern poets , many of which are but mere pale shadows when compared to these legendary greats. As in life and in schools poetry is basically ignored in our modern culture, IMHO.

Truly a brilliant write Robert! I am a big Coleridge fan, he was a genius and we can thank him and the Romantics for the rights and freedoms we have today, most people do not this and his and Wordsworth's efforts in this regard. You are you shining bright star among them; like Coleridge your poetry shall not go amiss! A fave;-)

Coleridge was a great poet, Robert, but when I read your work I tell myself that you are no less than him! May I add that Coleridge came to Malta in 1804 because of the warm climate and to try to cure himself of his addiction to opium. Here he became friends with the Governor, Sir Alexander Ball. ~ Regards // paul

Thank you my friend. Coleridge was a truly dedicated and brilliant poet. That gifted the world and we poets such inspiring poems. Thanks for that additional information on him too. Although, I did already know of his drug addiction. But I certainly did not know that he ever lived in Malta!

Robert, You cant do much better in this world than to honor the poetry of Coleridge. 'The Rime...' is a bit long for my part..,though I like the bits about the Albatross. Christabel and Kubla Khan are more to my liking. "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: ...His flashing eyes, his floating hair! Weave a circle round him thrice, And close your eyes with holy dread For he on honey-dew hath fed, And drunk the milk of Paradise." -Kubla Khan Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Lindley, you astound me. This is exquisite. A hint of Mariner, but pure unadulterated Lindley. I have, as you know, a soft spot for Coleridge. Have added this one definitely into my favourites. L x

My friend, that you have a soft spot for Coleridge's magnificent poetry does not surprise me at all. I found at the start of my poetic journey, the warm glow and depths of its artistry to be astounding. Thank you for your wonderful comment and friendship too. God bless....

"The moving Moon went up the sky, And no where did abide: Softly she was going up, And a star or two beside— Her beams bemocked the sultry main, Like April hoar-frost spread; But where the ship's huge shadow lay, The charmèd water burnt alway A still and awful red."

Thank you my friend. I join you in being a huge fan if Coleridge. His poem, The Rime of The Ancient Mariner sealed the deal for me when I read it well over 45 years ago.

I am unaware of these poets. (Being Honest) That being said, your thoughts leave me in awe- honoring them. The depth and the emotion. "into darkest seas we went, I never gave up" I love how you create hope, in times of trouble. There is always HOPE. Once again, you have created a Masterpiece my friend. This is amazing. ~ Brandy

Thank you my friend. What have we if we have not hope? A poet's life and writings are based upon hope. I appreciate your reading and your support of this poets tribute series my friend. I will today begin the tribute to my second poet of the five poets chosen to honor in this series. God bless...

The depth of your research pays great honor to Coleridge, Robert. Many have been dispirited from reading the Rime due to it's length, but if one truly appreciates his talent, it would not be deemed long enough. Some very skilled poets in PS, have felt the weight of being ignored as if the albatross hung around their necks. Take a measure of trust knowing that those are imposters, posing as poets. I appreciate your effort.

Thank you my friend. The way I see it, is these tribute poems honor the poet cited. If they are not atrocious, and the poet is unknown to the reader, then this series and my time put in is well worth it. As I desire to inform others about poetry, its rich history and its magnificent legendary poets of old. That many reject or else are offended by my doing this points to their own bias and lack of having a true poets heart and soul! La transgression ne m'appartient pas, pas plus que l'arrogance volontaire.

Oh, Coleridge. I remember many pleasant moments I spent with friends (mostly with girlfriends), discussing nuances of his Ancient Mariner translated into Russian by Nikolay Gumilev, an excellent Russian poet and translator. A great tribute that succeeded in rendering the spirit of The Rime. In fact, the best a poet can do for a poet.

Thus it goes~ poor education, funky teachers lead to ANY WORDS ON PAPER are a poem. An accursed LIE! Fight the good fight. I do understand your contribution to this site.Far from perfect am I. With zero desire tobe leading anything except back to good Poetry. We need classes in writing hefe for heaven's sake..Panagiota

Ah but we write none-the-less.. And Poetry has survived many eras and many fads my friend. These short series are as much to attempt to remedy that as it is to inspire me to write--although writing to honor these magnificent poets is a true purpose and a worthy goal in and of itself methinks.

" rhyme and flow spot on" you say-- means nothing here my friend , as the gods of popularity rule.. Quality must yield to popularity.... ask any of the many, very good poets that have left this site because of that sad reality. IMHO. Truth of it and 'tis a truly great pity too......
