Telephone

Oh! There’s again that incessant ring A land-line telephone - that infernal thing! And I start to speak to that device “Hello?” (then repeat that twice) No response is what I hear Nothing audible to my ear “Hello?” again, I say it loud … (The silent receivers’ still endowed). Through the rings, ears await assent Of some voice … some comment. Wait! Maybe I’m mixed up … Before I speak … must I pick it up?
