Sweet Tooth

When I have a bag of candy I have oh so many friends They all come gather around me But it don’t last, it always ends I guess I aint that special I’ve never been cool it’s true Still I just wanna fit in All I want is a friend or two So I steal me another dollar From daddy’s jacket behind the door Then I head on down the street back to the corner store The man behind the counter He asks me “What’s your choice?” “Please, some red blue and green ones.” I answer with in a quiet voice. He hands me my bag of candy I pray it’s a magical treat That someone might then like me and not disappear after they eat They like jelly beans and jawbreakers For my treats everyone pretends I’m just like one of them and we’re all the best of friends.

Gosh, aren't all lollipops sugar-free? What's the old saying that I whisper to myself as the Hersheys enters my vocal doorway? Oh yes, I remember it now, "One minute on your lips Mary Catherine forever on your hips" Oh, bah humbug!

I am also thinking of that little corner store, just across from the school. We were not allowed there, but boy did we go ...

We had a corner store less than a block away from our home and they sold penny candy back then. 25 cent got you a nice bag of candy. I'm giving away my age by saying this was back in the early 60's So, yes! your poem takes me back. Nicely done.

I've yet to figure out why some friends leave and some stay. The ones that stay count. Those that leave are like butterflies. Let them go and enjoy lifel Panagiota xxx

Wow no wonder this piece has so many comments, most of your writes (if not all) have a social message. Sad how those little kids grow up and still want to be loved and to fit in, candy doesn't cut it when you're an adult, so they use other things. Users are not true friends we know that! Great write, enjoyed!

Hi Richard, such a true write. In my younger days I did try that approach and what you write is what happened. Later, I won through the hatred by perseverance. I always remember the early years though. Your poem does bring back so many memories. It seems that fitting in is not something I can do too well. Still, I have a few true friends and that is all that matters. This poem sings in its truth, painting such vivid pictures in my mind. Have a wonderful Friday. Your friend always....Mike. A Fave

How true! Real friends are not there for candy or whatever else they can get. I mean all through life! My Dad told me some people are not friends but great actors, when you need them they are nowhere to be found. Shakespeare was right! " all the world's a stage". Panagiota

A True Friend will Stay, no matter what!! You have soooo many friends here, true friends. What you have expressed, through your words- happens in reality. So sad indeed. Hey, Richard!! I am staying, and you didn't have to offer me Candy. Thank you for being here, for being You. :) Brandy

I was always sitting by myself under a tree not sharing anything, not interested in candy either. But this poem is fun to read and I have SEEN this scenario in action and it is TRUE that it happens every single day. Someone gets hurt when the candy is gone.

G'day Richard … it's sad but true, we cannot buy friendship, but sometimes deeds like this can lead to a lasting friendship. Try crystalized ginger next time - Lindsay

Sad that some won't stick around when the candy's gone. A true friend will be your friend is spite of the candy. Poetic hugs, Juliet.

It reminds me a little of the prodigal son... he had many "friends" until he ran out of money. It's sad to think we're only liked for what material things we have to give. Your poem illustrates the need we all have for acceptance and love.

That’s a great parallel thought. Often the people we want so badly to be friends lack the qualifications.

This was enough right here, my friend: "I pray it’s a magical treat That someone might then like me and not disappear after they eat." Wow!

Hi Richard children and adults don't differ that much - we all want to be accepted, whether or not we are depends on how human we are - if I could rewind the past, I would be so happy to be your friend, Candy is great though) and now, today, I feel honoured to have met you through poetry soup a faith inspired, honest and kind poet! Hugs, Jennifer.

I wasnt being critical my friend. I think it a very fine piece and the fun comment was me remembering my son's great fondness and pleadings for me to buy candy jellybeans when we were at the mall.
