Cigarettes and babble from my mom and her friend,
Four years old, in someone's backyard, bored to no end,
When I spot a wonder that I will never forget.
He stood high on a stalk. I can still see him, yet.
That gent on the top, they said, was a sunflower.
No longer bored, I could gaze at him for an hour.
He was huge, like no other bloom I'd ever seen.
I was enraptured by the guy on a stalk of green,
A curious flower, like my bright friend in the sky,
Its bronze center, yellow petals, just for my eye.
Just like the sun, he tilted down for me to see.
He absorbed the sun's magic and shined it on me.
