Sun Rage
SUN RAGE
The grass is green no more
No flowers are in bloom
Some wilted twigs yellow, wistful
There's a palpable sense of gloom.
It was not always like this...
Those days there was cheer
All around and here
Trees , heavy with fruit, swayed to breeze
Content to lavishly, disperse their seed
Playful kids howled and squealed
Passersby stopped to sneak a peek
The green field truly a gardener's delight
During the day and at night
With its refreshing cool clime
And a lingering fragrance of lime.
But, in the year of famine...
Water became scant and scarce
Over the surface, cracks appeared
The birds and bees too disappeared
Of rain drops, dew there was no sign
Natures fury cruel, unkind
Unleashed despair and decline
Sparing none ,nor humankind.
Mother earth weary,her bosom dry
Heaved a deep and tearless sigh
She knew well, now the time was ripe
To bid her precious greens good bye...

Footnote
Northern Indian plains are dependent on timely monsoon rains for their fertility after an intense summer and if these are deficient or get delayed there is a threat of widespread famine.
