My Soul To Take
“Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
And if I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take”.
She walked me right up to it
and then she walked me through it.
As I hung on words she'd say
the prayer my mom taught me to pray.
Then as I lay me down to sleep
I'd hear her as she'd softly weep.
How can this be? We prayed we prayed.
Still her torment. It just stayed.
Sneaking through the house that night
to stay with her til morning light.
Visions of me the hero in my head
I climbed so quietly in her bed.
Not one sound made, no not one peep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
Stealth I guess I'd always lack.
As mother held the covers back.
Both are safe now for awhile
tears replaced by sleepy smile.
And if I die before I wake
I knew my mothers heart would break.
So keep us safe Lord her and I
within Your grace don't let us die.
But if You need for heavens sake
Here am I Lord Yours to take.
