Sonnet For Her
You asked once to what did I attribute
how long our marriage has lasted, I replied
with guarded generic generalities to contribute
to the conversation, and to save my hide,
cause I learned long ago to watch out for innocent
sounding questions as experienced husbands do.
But I did, and continue to give it much serious intent,
which is itself one reason. I see that there are few
couples that after they learn each others foibles and
failings continue to take one another seriously
as we do. Our long conversation does not end
at a particular moment or good-bye and obviously
we are always taking care of one another even when we
are not talking. In the end I think that is the key.
