Smile At a Muslim

These are just a few words about reality, as Muslims struggle each day with individuality. What is a Muslim and from whence does he come? Like you and me, he is born into the world. because of two someone's. Many of us grew up knowing prejudice in life, I was gangly, naive, ever given to strife. Raised as a Christian I never knew what it meant, As my Muslim friend, how people could vent. My younger years were spent playing baseball you see, They were a team of Puerto Ricans, not one Muslim to be. My Polish heritage was always the butt of a joke, It was infinitely small, compared to a Muslim's yoke. My parent's generation was prejudiced in mind, To Blacks, and Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Hispanics and people of all kind. I, being naive, never even recognized the strife, to which these peoples had been subjected to in life. From experience I learned to treat each person individually, slowly finding out that that was how they treated me. Oh, I can say I've met both good and bad, and the underlying theme is all so sad. For it seems that we put labels to people like cans of beans, stick them on a shelf, never tasting their means. But once you open that can and taste the fare, you may very well find yourself going back there. We have our share of detractors in this world of our choice, but Muslims are not the ones against whom we should give voice. They are as decent, hard working, and loving as you or me. They only want what is best for their family. I pray to my Christian God for Muslims though they know it not, because they are people that He has not forgot. Words between man and God are private you see, that is what connects man to his Deity. But in every society there is always some remark made aloud, about how this group or that group has no right to be allowed. What, I wonder, gives them the right to speak that thought? Unless it was the freedoms for which this country fought. And I am sure that the Muslims fought with us too, so they could have an American dream or two. So, I think I'll stay in my own naive little way, and keep those prejudices well at bay. I won't care whether the next person is Red or Yellow, Black or White, I won't care if he's Hindu or Christian, Jewish or Zen on sight. Yes, I'll like the next Muslim I see, I'm going to smile at them, and I bet they smile back at me!

I sincerely admire the ethical ideas from your poems , good imagery and rhythm. Tank you for your visit, constructive observation, goodwill, sincerity and possible affinities regarding everyday morality. High appreciation. Often, my attempts are too spontaneous to touch form and content in such a good balance. So double letters or missing one let be ”poetical license”. What else could be better welcome than attentive reading of a poet of my modest work?Best regards and wishes.

Thanks Oyvidiu. Any poet's are his life, and the emotions are expressed best when they are correct. I do not tell you this because I did not understand your meaning, but others may glance at it and then not see the "deeper" you. I appreciate your kind words and look forward to reading more of your work.

Hi Dan, Well done on your excellent piece. Its a mediocre mind that will generalise about anybody and so easy to slide into. Muslims are such good paying people is my experience and worked into a largely Muslim community. I know how hard it is just to live and get by . The fans of hatred are blowing everywhere and here too. This is an outstreched hand of friendship and I gladly shake it.

Thanks Jannie. People are people...no matter the color, race, or creed. Muslims are only the latest to be exploited in the manner with which they are being painted. If enough voices are raised, perhaps we can begin to change outlook of some of those who are so judgemental. I appreciate your read and comments.

This wonderful poem shares such insight and intelligent aspirations it should be in first place Dan! I really love your outlook as an example to everyone of how humanity should embrace our different cultures. We are all United under the same God and related to each other divinely. Congratulations on being on the Winner's list. This is a Fave for me! : )

Thanks Connie. I have been blessed by having been involved with a number of cultures in my life. Each one has its own peculiarities, drawbacks, and examples of people being people. I only wish we would all see them as we are...people. I appreciate your comments very much.

Thankfully I have parents that never talked badly about any race or religion. I am always stunned when someone talks ugly! Even when you are familiar with someone's religion, you don't know anything about them unless you talk to them. "Love others as you love yourself" very nice write, Dan! Congrats!

Thank you, Kim. I have been blessed by knowing 4 or 5 different cultures in life. I'm only surprised that there is so much bias in the world that we cannot even give the other guy the benefit of a doubt. I appreciate your comments very much.

Hi Dan. Congratulations on your win. A smile goes such a long way with all those mirror neurons involved. This is a powerful and meaningful story. Many wishes, Kai

Inspired! You were truly inspired on this one Dan. Like anything else. We judge a whole group of people based on the actions of a few(ok more than a few) radicals. Really nice write. I look to see this one close to the top if not on top:)

Thanks Dan. I am surprised that man's inhumanity to man has allowed us to survive as long as we have in this world. l have had the good fortune to have experienced several different cultures in life and each has had a profound influence on my life. I appreciate your words and thank you for the read.
