She Danced

I had a mason jar full of lightning between my thighs- a half-lit cigarette clenched between my teeth and eyes as wide as the Trinity River when you swayed your way slowly across the deck and through the front door. You went straight to the stereo. Turned up the volume and howled like a huntress who had just made her first kill of the season. The trailer house began to quake. Cheap speakers became back up singers to the showcase that everyone’s head had turned to. You were oblivious. Too entrenched in the concert to care about anything else but music notes falling down on the world like a storm made by the Gods. I finished my cigarette. Took a swig of shine- wrote music in my head meant for a woman that could summon rain by the way, she tossed her hair- Make sandstorms with her hips- And set fire to men like me with a blue-eyed stare that no amount of tears could quench. -James Kelley 2018
