~ for the scores of casualties who fight the war at home … the silent war of broken hearts and families ~
*
such horrid forfeits all wars thresh
a scree of youth in blood and flesh
another bride that numbs her pain
lamenting voids that stark, remain
those purple badges - medals, gold
the vicious proxies, scant they hold
a future dreamt - her chances, dim
a soul conjoined to naught but him
the careworn lines that etch her face
tell saddened tales time won’t erase
and thoughts of life with lesser men
aren’t worth those risks to start again
the darkness comes too frequent now
with thoughts of joining him somehow
but left behind, their love's sweet seed -
three little hearts that thrum with need
their care won't leave a moment for
her tears to streak self-pity's floor
HIS duty's done - absolved by death
but hers grinds on with every breath
though when they're safe asleep again
she’ll drink and think what might've been
her shadowed heart - the last train home
she’ll shut the lights, and dance …
alone.
